Hi,
I just purchased a WinterPromise Our American Story 2. My kids are 10 and 12. The 10yo is a late reader and the the 12yo reads/comprehends at an adult level. My plan is to read the DK encyclopedia spine and the history selections with them. I was planning to read-aloud the adventure books as they are too hard for the 10yo and too easy or have already been read for the 12yo. I would like to assign some independant reading for the 12yo. For example, as we are reading about slavery and the Undergound Railroad, he has been reading Frederick Douglass' autobiography and answering comprehension questions from the internet. I'm not sure if I like cming up with my own selections as that is what I was trying to accomplish to buying a manual instead of piecing it together myself. Any suggestions? Amy |

I would look at either the LA readers for American Cultures or some of the American Cultures adventure readers. If you get the LA readers set for American Cultures for the ability level of your twelve year old, it would be all scheduled out. American Cultures is the next age level for the same time period of American Story 2.
