We officially started this week. :-)
The Great Turkey Walk is so wonderful! We've already read half of the book. We just can't stop at one chapter a day.
Ghosts of the Civil War has been a hit too. Oh, The Last Safe House is another winner. Gee, the books are all good!

I bought some notebooking pages from History Scribe (http://jimmiescollage.com/2009/07/westvon-deal/) (via CurrClick) and am going to use those instead of the WP pages. I find the WP pages have way too much text. I want my child to do the writing.

I got the middler pack (DD is 5th grade/ 10 yo). I think the On My Own was a bit overwhelming for her. It's going to take some adjustment. But it's a good thing. It's time to start slowly moving that direction.

And I created a webpage for Sprite to access the links suggested in the teacher's guide. It's just for her, but if anyone else would like to refer to it, here it is -- WP AS2 Links (http://www.squidoo.com/winter-promise-american-story-2-links).

I may add in other history related links, but it will all be things that I approve of my child looking at. Of course, your values may vary from mine, so always preview.

A link website, how awesome!

We are on week 4 of AS2 and also LOVING it. I think I like it even better than AS1, is that possible?

My ds has been having a BLAST with the Civil War Soldiers. I'm impressed with the Civil War Places Map (from the original On Your Own pages). We're behind on that though, but we'll catch up!

Glad you like it. I forgot to say that it's only the start. I'll keep adding through the year in chunks. I did all the Civil War ones to get us started.

I don't know if I'd say it's better, but it's really good. I sort of think whatever we're studying at the moment is the best. :D

Hmmm... I don't know about the map. I saw the map assignment, but there was no map per se. I'm substituting something else.

Oh, you have to use an outline map of your choosing, then fill in the parts assigned. I use Uncle Josh maps, but WP sells the Old World Maps also.

We just finished the 3rd grade reader, Iron Thunder, which replaced Jericho's Journey. It's an Avi historical fiction piece in a series called *I Witness*. It was much less intense than Fighting Ground and I think we might be looking up more books in the series, it was so good!

We loved this one so much that my children would not let me sell it with the rest of our AS2 books! It is a great book!

We loved almost all of the AS2 books, except for the True Tales of WW1. Not sure if that is still part of the program. The WW2 one they liked okay.

Have fun! We loved AS2 last year.

I'll be keeping posted on everyone's progress with AS2 for the next five months as I glean all these great ideas and handy tools (Jimmie's website!!!)from you.

We'll be starting a much scaled down version in another five months; ...looking for more great ides to come!

We start on Monday, and the twins can't wait. My daughter loves the books and has already read Rose's Journal. She enjoyed it so much that I purchased another book (Hannah's Journal) from the series for her. My son is looking forward to learning all about the Civil War and WWII.

Jimmie, what a great resource you are creating. My kids and I will enjoy looking at all the websites you have posted!

That's what I was thinking. I'm getting a lot of ideas from Jimmie. I raided her American Story 1 page, and there were oodles of ideas. :o Yes, we aren't doing AS1 until next year. :o
